Team Captains play a key role in the success of the Down Syndrome Walk Arizona. You’re the voice of DSNetwork leading up to the walk—sharing your personal story, increasing awareness about Down syndrome in the community, and educating others on our programs and services. In addition, you raise vital funds for the organization, which allows us to continue to reach new heights in providing accurate information, networking opportunities, and advocacy for and about Down syndrome.

What is a Team Captain?

  • is the leader of a walk team
  • recruits family, friends, and colleagues to join their team
  • builds excitement and commitment
  • maximizes the fundraising potential of all team walkers
  • provides inspiration and motivation
  • recognizes and acknowledges all efforts made by the team
  • Your leadership is invaluable to DSNetwork, and your dedication and hard work are greatly appreciated

How do you build and motivate your team?

Building a team can boost camaraderie and morale, whether with family, friends, colleagues, or members of affiliated organizations. As a Team Captain, it’s important to find ways to build excitement and commitment with team members. Here are a few tips:

  • Host a kick-off party
  • Ask early – the earlier you begin, the more you will raise
  • Donate to yourself to set the tone and show that you are committed
  • Set a minimum fundraising goal (suggested min. of $500)
  • Personalize your fundraising team page with stories, photos, and a connection to DSNetwork
  • Share your fundraising page link and walk materials on social sites
  • Create friendly competition between different teams

TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE – HOW TO CREATE A TEAM

  • Go to the DSNetwork Walk Fundraising Page: Down Syndrome Walk Arizona
  • Click the “Join / Create a Team” Green Button to the right of the Walk home page.
  • Sign up using email (or Facebook or Google).
  • Choose “Start a New Team”. Add your team name. Theme names encouraged!
  • Add your account details, add your T-SHIRT SIZE, optionally click the box for text notifications if you want, add 1-2 sentences that sum up why your team is walking, then click Next.
  • This is where you add and choose T-shirt sizes for your loved one with Down syndrome, plus any family and friends you want included right away. Important: This is the only chance you’ll have, as the Team Captain, to add people directly to your team (for example: spouse, kids, grandparents, etc.). Anyone else can join later using your team link—they’ll just need to sign up with their own email.
  • Confirm your registration and submit. You will receive an email receipt. Now let’s set up your page…
  • Click Registration Complete – Set Up Your Page.
  • On the Manage Your Team Page, Select “PARTICIPATE AS PART OF A TEAM”, verify this is how you want your team name to appear, add in your own fundraising goal, and your own personal story. Upload a photo (see parameter suggestions), and, if you like, a logo.
  • Share your team page with your unique URL. Click the Grown Your Team button to invite via text or social media and send personalized invites to family and friends. Or,
  • Click the “My Team Page” on the right of your Team’s Name and copy and share your unique URL.
  • From your Team Page, friends and family can make a donation and/or scroll down to see “join the team” to walk with you on November 21!
