Spark of Awesome Mom’s Award: This award is given to a mom who is a parent to an individual with Down syndrome. This person demonstrates how she challenges herself to raise greater public awareness and understanding of people with Down syndrome within the Down syndrome community. Spark of Awesome Dad’s Award: This award is given to a dad who is a parent to an individual with Down syndrome. This person demonstrates how he challenges himself to increase public awareness and understanding of people with Down syndrome in the community. Past recipients: Mark Taylor, John Fraleigh, Sam Patel, Enzo Fiorenza, Mike Funk, Michael Masks, Joe Quezada
Outstanding Foundation/Corporation/Business Award: This award is given to a business for its service to the community through a history of philanthropic giving, leadership, and advocacy on issues important to the Down syndrome community. Past recipients: Spencer’s Place, Phoenix Children’s, Colten Cowell Foundation, Albertsons Safeway Foundation, Rivers & Moorehead, Thunderbird Charities, Hastings & Hastings
Outstanding Service Award: This award is given to an individual, such as a sibling, healthcare professional, provider, therapist, or advocate, who demonstrates how they have helped an individual with Down syndrome to discover their full potential and a brighter future. Spark of Awesome Self-Advocate Award: This award is given to an individual with Down syndrome who exemplifies the spirit of self-advocacy. This person actively promotes inclusion and raises awareness about Down syndrome while living their life to the fullest. They inspire others through their personal achievements and dedication to fostering a more inclusive and understanding community. Past award recipients: Nohea Palesano, Sam Derivan
Spark of Awesome Educator Award: This new award recognizes an outstanding teacher, paraeducator, or educational professional who supports individuals with Down syndrome. This individual demonstrates exceptional positivity and a deep passion for their work. They are a beacon of inspiration, fostering an inclusive and nurturing learning environment. First-time award recipient: Jennifer Nelson
The Event Selection Committee uses the following guidelines when evaluating nominations:
- DSNetwork Awards recognize those people who have contributed time and talent for the betterment of individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
- DSNetwork Board Members, employees of DSNetwork, and any of these individuals’ immediate family members are not eligible to be nominated for an award.
- Nominations will be evaluated with considerable attention given to the beneficiaries of the nominee’s activities and the impact those activities have had.
- Challenges the nominee has faced and how they overcame them.
