ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME

As DSnetwork's Enrichment Center assistant, Brendan is a self-advocate amd enjoys doing weekly video blogs for the agency.

If you ask Brendan about Down syndrome, he will tell you he believes there are no limits to what can someone with Down syndrome can accomplish and with the opportunity, he can do anything he puts his mind to.
The abilities far out weigh the disability!

WELCOME TO DS ConneX

DS ConneX is network of support groups specifically for parents, grandparents, and siblings. Each family member, young or old, is invited to join a group at anytime. This is a safe place to share your experiences, joys, or concerns about having a family member with Down syndrome. The goal of ConneX is to strengthen family support and provide you with needed information and resources. Each group is catered towards the individual needs of moms, dads, grandparents, and both adult and young siblings. New members are always welcome to join us for drop in meetings.

DS ConneX: For Young Sibs

DSNetwork is committed to supporting siblings of people with Down syndrome by creating welcoming communities for siblings across the lifespan; improving the range and availability of sibling support services; and providing education about sibling-related issues. DS ConneX for Young Sibs is for brothers, sisters, cousins and other close family members of an individual with Down syndrome between the ages of 8 and 17 years old. This group meets for monthly SibShops, where siblings come together for fun activities and participate in a structured workshop specifically designed for sharing the joys and challenges inherent in being a sibling.

DS ConneX: For Adult Sibs

DS ConneX for Adult Sibs is a DSNetwork support group for adult siblings and non-parental guardians (ages 18+) of individuals with Down syndrome.

Siblings will likely be involved in the lives of their family members with Down syndrome longer than anyone else. Siblings are important and play life-long roles in the lives of their sibling with Down syndrome. We often face the same challenges that parents experience – isolation, a need for information, concern about the future, and the demands of constant caregiving – as well as our own. As the largest advocacy group for our siblings with Down syndrome, it goes without saying that we understand the challenges inherent in living with Down syndrome. It doesn’t matter if you live with your sibling, are their full time caregiver, guardian, or in the process of a transition etc.

DS ConneX: For Grandparents

Being a grandparent of a child with Down syndrome can be a great joy. You have the opportunity to see your own child become a nurturing parent and feel a swell of pride as they experience parenthood for themselves. You have years of parenting knowledge to draw upon if you are needed (that phone call asking if you think the baby is ready to start solid food or when to call the doctor, etc). And then, the most important part, that beautiful child!

As a grandparent of a child with Down syndrome, your relationship can be especially important. You provide both emotional and practical support for parents as well as providing support for your grandchildren. You have come to love and accept them for everything they are and you love them unconditionally.  DS ConneX for Grandparents is designed to support you in your role as a grandparent of a child with Down syndrome. This group meets to discuss Down syndrome and what it means for the family, how they can help their sons and daughters and where to find resources and information.
