Before I was aware of what Down syndrome would mean to me

In honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, by Karen Szilagyi

I was not aware I would have a baby with Down syndrome until he arrived

I was not aware of the unconditional love you have for your children no matter how many chromosomes they have

I was not aware that he would be so cute

I was not aware that everyone would want to share a special story with me about someone they knew or loved with Down syndrome

I was not aware I would be able to go out in public with my baby and be OK!

I was not aware that one day I would go out in public to show off my child and to talk with others about Down syndrome

I was not aware I would have so many great friends who are someone how connected to me because of my son

I was not aware my life would be better than it was before his arrival

I was not aware I would have so much more patience in my day to day living

I was not aware my son would already have two little girl best friends he loves to hang out with in his typical preschool class

I was not aware he would be swimming, playing iPad, and riding his toys in the street with all of the other neighborhood kids

I was not aware of the unbelievable LOVE I would have for this child – prenatal testing couldn’t measure that one

Now I just want to make everyone aware of how happy and blessed our family is to have someone with Down syndrome who loves us!

DSNetwork invites you to share your journey, facts and stories about Down syndrome to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month.  Submit your story to DSNetwork and your child’s picture can be featured in an upcoming newsletter!

This is wonderful! I never can get enough of this fantastic video and your verse is great! You really have a lot to show off about your amazing son!

Thank you so much for your posting. Our son Keaton is only 18 months and although we think he’s the greatest, we’re still unsure of his potential. Christian walks, runs, and swims beautifully! Just amazing :). Your story gives us so much hope.
